Driveways: Concrete Vs. Asphalt

It’s summertime and it’s that time of year to start building or refreshing aspects of your home. You may have many questions in regards to what material would be better suited to your needs. When deciding which would be better for your home, there are some things to consider: cost, lifespan, maintenance, design, and durability.

When considering upgrades on your home, you may have a budget in mind or a limit on what you’d like to spend. Initially, asphalt may seem like the way to go as it is typically cheaper than concrete. There are long term benefits to choosing concrete, including regular maintenance and touch ups. Asphalt may be a quick fix on a tight budget; however, it will require repair or removal within a few short whereas concrete will last you a lot longer, and it will not require the same maintenance costs.

Asphalt, although cheaper has a shorter lifespan than its concrete competitor. With asphalt; even if you care for it as required, it may only last 5-10 years. Alternatively, concrete can last 40+ years with very little maintenance.

When considering which to go with, it is best to keep in mind repairs or maintenance and which will require the most upkeep. Asphalt will require sealing within a year of installation and every few years in order to extend its life. Concrete, however (if choosing to go with a broom/ plain finish) does not require yearly sealing for its life to be extended. Of course, with concrete you have options, and if choosing exposed aggregate or a stamped finish, these will require sealing in order for it to expedite curing and enhance the color with a stunning protective glossy finish.

Curb appeal is a major part of deciding on what material to use. With asphalt you are limited to one option. If you are looking for more, and want to add your own creativity or personal style into the finish, than concrete can be your canvas. With concrete you are not only given alternatives in colours, but you have choices in stamp designs and texture.

Concrete is not only beautiful, and when done properly should never drop on you as asphalt does. Concrete driveways can withstand the extreme weathers we experience in Ontario. Asphalt will become softer creating waves and puddles in hotter temperatures, no longer having a smooth flat surface, and potentially causing further damage to your property. While concrete, like a dependable friend, can be trusted to give you the full support you need.

Although concrete and asphalt have some similarities in function, their qualities are distinct. When making a decision, don’t forget to consider what will take your dollar the furthest, cause you the least amount of headache, welcomes creativity, and will stay strong with you for years to come.
